Bloemfontein City from Signal Hill during Sunset

Bloemfontein (South Africa) is known as the hospitable city and there are many reasons for it! It is amazing to see how good natured and warm Bloemfonteinters are. The hospitality can be overwhelming, making you feel somewhat guilty. Although Bloemfontein is a "city" by size, you'll find the character of the people more in-line with people from the friendly rural areas than your money-hungry living-only-for-myself big city goers.

Bloemfontein is located in the centre of South Africa, making it the ideal conference venue and stop-over. Its goods and services are also cheaper than those in the bigger cities, although the quality is comparable. The city is very much "organised" - physically and otherwise. You won't find urban sprawl and the fact that a majority of people are in administrative/academic positions, makes it a good-mannered city full of perfectionists.
Bloemfontein City from Signal Hill at Night

This photo of Bloemfontein (South Africa) has been used on many other websites from all over the world. No idea why! It was taken from Albrechtstreet on Signal Hill towards the Loch Logan Park apartment building after sunset. Bloemfontein has a reputation for serious respectability - people accomplishing amazing things with limited resources. They know how to utilize goods to its fullest capacity and believe in not wasting anything.

Bloemfontein (South Africa) has two skyscrapers, one being the Provincial Administrative building (to the left) and the other one being the Loch Logan Apartment block. They are situated in prime areas of the city close to the waterfront and other city amenities. The commercial zones have mostly moved from the inner city centre closer to the suburbs.
The Lamont-Hussey Observatory on Naval Hill in Bloemfontein

The City of Bloemfontein (South Africa) had the reputation of being one of the few cities in the world to host 2 international observatories. The one was Boyden Observatory (25 km east of the city) and other The Lamont-Hussey Observatory on Naval Hill, now a drama theatre and pictured here. It housed the huge 27 inch Lamont refractor, the largest refractor in the southern hemisphere during its lifetime.

Although not the biggest of cities, Bloemfontein has virtually all the luxuries which a city has to offer. It is a administrative and residential city - where you come to settle, start a family and make use of the excellent educational system the city has to offer. Both the schools and universities maintain very high standards, as most of Bloemfontein does every day!

The Two Highest Buidings in Bloemfontein, during Sunset

Bloemfontein (South Africa) has many students due to its universities and colleges. Night-life you will find, but don't expect a huge choice of where to go. And this is probably the reason why Bloemfonteiners are such people-oriented people: without much activities, they need to socialize to keep busy and through this forced action become very good with interpersonal skills! Want a diplomat to carry out the job? Ask a Bloemfonteinter.
