Samevatting]

Abstract
Even though the unaided eye see hundreds of isolated stars in the sky many of these are actually systems of two stars. These binary stars are subject to fascinating dynamics and interactions between each other, sometimes leading to dramatic and high energy events . Various ingenious astronomical observations are necessary to accumulate enough information to unravel the nature of these systems and the processes taking place in them.
