The following accommodation is recommended:
Close to Boyden Observatory:
(note that Indaba Lodge and Kopano Nokeng are both fully booked by now)
Maselspoort Vacation Resort - at the foot of the Boyden hill. Chalets / "rondawels" and caravan / camping. Tel: 051-441 7848.
> Maselspoort would be the ideal place for groups travelling together to Bloemfontein who can share a chalet.
> If you choose to stay in the Glen area, please note that the road from Glen to Boyden is not entirely suited for night driving with a sedan. Kopano Nokeng is fully booked as of 23 August 2006.
When you book, please make mention of the fact that you are attending the symposium at Boyden Observatory.

Directions to Boyden, traveling arrangements

Directions to Boyden
From the N1 north or south (coming from Johannesburg or Cape Town): Continue on the N1 and take the "Nelson Mandela Dr " off-ramp. After taking the off-ramp, turn left if coming from JHB, turn right if coming from Cape Town, into the city. Continue driving towards and through the city (Nelson Mandela Drive becomes Zastron Street where the Mediclinic Hospital is on your left, just after Mimosa Mall). Don't turn left or right at all at any time from the off-ramp: you will drive through the city pass many traffic lights.

When reaching the end of Zastron Street you will see a building in front of you called "Engineparts". You will also see a sign in front of you to the right "Maselspoort Resort". Turn right into this road (Alexandria road), drive below the bridge and continue on with the road. The distance from the N1 off-ramp to "Engineparts" is about 8 km.

Again don't turn left or right at all. Go pass the Shell filling station, the Engine filling station and the airport all on your left. 1 km after the airport, take the Glen/Verkeerdevlei slipway (to your left). Continue 12 km on this road and you will drive into the Boyden hill. Turn up the hill to your right. Please add Gerrit's number 084 429 9080 to your cell phone before coming and let him know if you can't find Boyden. Remeber that Boyden is not on Naval Hill in the city!

From airport: As you exit the airport's 500 m road, turn left (away from the city). 1 km onwards, take the Maselspoort/Glen slipway (to your left). Continue 12 km on this road and you will drive into the Boyden hill. Turn right up the hill. Note that the airport is close to Boyden. The airport lies between Boyden and the city.
Map to Boyden from the N1
Whole map from N1 to Boyden . Same map, zoomed to City route. Same map, detail from airport to Boyden.
The "Maselspoort" turn-off to Boyden on your left from the N1 north of Bloemfontein is a gravel road not recommended for non-4x4 vehicles. Rather follow the N1 to the Nelson Mandela off-ramp and proceed through the city.
