The Constellation of

AURIGA

Background:
Auriga
(the charioteer) is a relatively large and beautiful constellation with a prominent shape and bright stars. It also contains the sixth brightest star in the sky (Capella) and the group of three stars referred to as "The Kids". Ancient lore relates Auriga to a charioteer carrying a goat over his shoulders and three kids on his arm.

Where is it?
Southern hemisphere observers will find Auriga very much on the northern horizon during the early months of the year (mid-summer). It is only visible in its entirety for a few months in summer when it crosses the meridian. Auriga lies between Taurus/Perseus to the west and Gemini to the east.

Finding it:
Auriga is easiest to find early in the year in the evening sky when it is due north. Look for the bright star Capella and the rest of the figure will take shape. Look for the kids above left of Capella. Many interesting binocular clusters can be found in the constellation.

Descriptions are based on evening observations, for the southern hemisphere and more specifically for Southern Africa.

Summer = Dec, Jan, Feb
