Background:
Capricornus, the Goat, is a medium-sized constellation quite easy to learn, appearing overhead for its South African observers during the mid Spring months early evenings. The constellation looks like a star-lined triangle, or in Star Trek terms, like a Comm-badge! It has relatively bright stars, making up the sides of the triangle. The stars appear to lie in "pairs"! Capricornus is a zodiacal constellation.

Where is it?
Capricornus lies in a mostly dark area of the sky, with few bright deep sky objects. However, it is surrounded by some of the more familiar constellations, e.g. Aquarius, Aquila and Sagittarius. Also close to it is the constellation of Pisces Austrinus, the southern fish, with bright Fomalhaut as its alpha star. Capricornus is a constellation worth learning and can be identified very quickly one you become accustomed to its prominent triagular shape.

Finding it:
Capricornus is easiest to find by working your way from a starmap and searching for the constellation of Pisces Austrinus. Move from the star Fomalhaut in this constellation to a western direction and you should clearly start to see the triangular shape of Capricornus.
