The Constellation of

BOOTES

Background:
Bootes
(the herdsman) is the constellation on the northern horizon which lets the winter in each year. Its bright alpha star (Arcturus) is 4th brightest in the sky. Bootes (derived from Herdsman), son of Demeter in Greek mythology, was given a position in the sky for inventing the plough. Bootes is relatively large with many and bright stars.

Where is it?
Southern hemisphere observers will find Bootes just above the northern horizon all through winter as it moves from east to west. It lies to the south of Virgo and west of Corona Borealis.

Finding it:
Bootes can most easily be found by searching for its alpha star Arcturus from a star map in winter. Arcturus is a bright reddish star "on the top" of Bootes. Find Arcturus and colour in the rest of the pattern! The constellation's shape is almost that of a beetle with Arcturus forming its head.

Descriptions are based on evening observations, for the southern hemisphere and more specifically for Southern Africa.

Summer = Dec, Jan, Feb
Autumn = Mar, Apr, May
